Entertaining and educating through lively performance of jazz and cabaret music en Francais
Jean-Jacques Psaute has been delighting audiences since 2001, performing as lead vocalist first with The Romance of Paris and currently with Deja Nous. The group's repertoire features various periods and styles of popular and jazz songs all presented in the pure tradition of French Cabaret called "Music-Hall." Deja Nous delivers compelling and entertaining interpretations of the songs of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Claude Nougaro, Charles Aznavour, Yves Montand, Charles Trenet, Sinatra, Cole and others.
Deja Nous has performed at many Burlington venues including Leunig's Bistro, the Flynn Theater and FlynnSpace, The Firehouse Gallery, Saint Michael's College, at the Discover Jazz Festival, and on The Chruch Street Marketplace. Regional performances have included The Strand Theater in Plattsburgh, The Bee's Knees in Morrisville, The Lake Placid Lodge, The International Jazz Festival in Essex, and Smuggler's Notch Resort in Jeffersonville, as well as at Market Fests, FrancoFetes, and other major functions organized by the Alliance Francaise. The group now includes musicians Dave Whittle on percussion, Peter K.K. Williams on bass, and Rob Guerrina on piano.
Jean-Jacques grew up in the North of France, with a rich tradition of singing and music in his family. Any gathering was an excuse for singing and story telling. "You had to sing a song or tell a story, or no desert!" Psaute, who moved from France to Vermont in 1995, works as a project manager by day. Deja Nous is the product of Psaute's dream to bring the essence of French music and drama to audiences in Vermont and beyond.
Peter K.K. Williams has been a professional bassist for over 35 years and has played with an astonishing number of ensembles. Beginning in the early '60's with surf music, he has played many music styles including the blues, country rock, folk rock, pop, on and off-Broadway shows, R&B, disco, jazz, traditional swing, and orchestral. In addition, he was a member of the most eclectic fusion jazz band to ever erupt in Vermont, Science Fixion. In the course of this long and varied career Peter has played not only a traditional electric bass, but also a hybrid 6-string electric bass and the string bass. He has performed and recorded in Vermont, California and New Orleans. As a member of Deja Nous, Peter provides both a high degree of technical prowess and an impeccable sense of taste and style.
Dave Whittle is a native New Englander who has been playing drums and percussion for almost 40 years. He performed for many years in Maine in the late 70s and early 80s including 5 summers of jazz and latin music at the Sandpiper Inn in Ogunquit. He was also the drummer for a still revered original rock band known as The Substance. Since moving to Vermont, he played nightclubs with various groups, recorded a CD of original music with guitarist Dayve Huckett, played theater with The White River Valley Players and The Barre Players, and is an original member of Brazilian Percussion group Sambatucada. He currently plays with The Dixie Six and Deja Nous
